"A rather surprising discovery which surfaced in the correspondence was an astonishing claim Halliburton made to Chambers as the reason why he had undertaken his costly Flying Carpet journey around the world. He claimed that because he had been “losing ground” at Princeton and that it was becoming the vogue to discredit his books there he made the flying trip to reestablish his prestige at his beloved alma mater. However, his claim may have actually been a melodramatic attempt to make a point as this author found no corroborating evidence to validate the allegation. It may have stemmed from the fact that he was especially sensitive to criticisms of his books in Princeton publications or when Bobbs-Merrill failed to advertise his books in those publications. As he had demonstrated many times in the past Princeton held a very special place in his heart." From A Shooting Star Meets the Well of Death, Why and How Richard Halliburton Conquered the World.
